Can VR Transform Radio Communication Training in Fire and Rescue?

How can we make radio communication training safer, more cost-effective—and at the same time, more accessible and realistic? That’s the question we set out to explore together with two fire departments, using our XR platform Fynd CORE.

Effective communication is essential during high-pressure operations, yet traditional training often requires significant time, resources, and detailed planning. We wanted to find out: Can VR training recreate these situations in a way that feels natural and still delivers operational value?

Training for Critical Situations—Without the Logistics or Risk

Using Fynd CORE, we created life-sized, 1:1 scale scenarios where personnel could train together and practice communication routines in realistic environments. Everything from initial callouts and window messages to structured reporting from the scene was simulated — without needing physical vehicles, equipment, or in-person setups.

With VR, teams are placed directly into the scenario, without any real-world risk. They can train on complex incidents such as a person trapped under a forklift or suspected hazardous materials, and practice reading the environment and communicating clear situational updates to their team in real time.

Collaborating and Preparing in Virtual Environments

Although participants joined from different locations, they met in the same shared scenario within Fynd CORE. Before the operation, each team member was assigned a specific role—such as team lead, first responder, or observer—allowing them to practice leadership, collaboration, and communication ahead of action.

By making the virtual environment as authentic as possible, we tested how natural it felt to report, coordinate, and make decisions within a digital space. The feedback? Fast, effective, and surprisingly realistic! See when we tested it with Norwegian fire personnel:

Conclusion: A New Dimension of Training

This pilot confirmed what we’ve seen time and again: VR training in Fynd CORE works extremely well for communication training, offering a new layer to how fire and rescue teams can train for coordination and decision-making.

The platform lowers the barrier to train, reduces the need for complex logistics, and makes it easier to repeat and evaluate critical skills. It’s more training, less setup—and better preparedness.

This is just the beginning. Fynd CORE is built to be the preferred platform for realistic, repeatable, and accessible training in complex and high-risk environments — for fire and rescue, defense, and emergency preparedness.
